Standard Computer
Recommendations
A standard computer is a basic computer that a user can use for: Internet
surfing, sending and receiving email, use for creating Word documents
(reports, articles for work or school), use for with bookkeeping
software, the downloading and playing of music, view videos, and
playing the ocassional game. In fact, most standard computers will handle just about anything
most folks could want.
A standard desktop computers is also good for small business since standard office software
will run easily. Of course, individual computers may vary in their capabilities and running speed.
When looking at computers, note that a monitor and speakers may or may not come with a computer as a complete
package. At times, a monitor may be pictured but will not be part of the computer package. Always check it out.
Because of technical advancements and mass production, cheap computers are better and stronger than ever before.
As a rough guide, typical cost of a standard desktop computer including a monitor and speakers is about $450 to
$700. Without a monitor the price can be as low as $399.

When a monitor is part of a standard computer package (it's not always), it is usually a 17"
LCD color monitor. It is a plus if you can adjust the brightness (that ability must be on the

If you get a CRT monitor, we recommend a flat screen, which is less stressful on
the eyes.

DSL, or a cable connection, depending on what is available in your area.

Windows® 7 is the new standard but unproven. Try to avoid Windows® Vista which
is still available, but if Windows® XP is available, even with an extra fee we recommend it.

A typical package will usually include Microsoft® Works 9.0, Microsoft® Office Home
and Student Edition 2007, or Microsoft® Office Basic Edition 2007. We strongly
recommend you use an Anti-Virus program and use a Firewall. See Part 5: Software for more information on software programs.
Some retail sellers may offer an extended warranty on your new computer or laptop. We do not
recommend them, ever. They are expensive are very rarely used.
