RAM Memory
Computer Memory
Random Access Memory, also referred to as RAM, Memory, computer
memory, PC memory, and RAM Memory is the computer's temporary data bank. It is used for
storing programs, such as the system's operating system (O/S) and the other data that is currently
running on the computer. This data is loaded as it is needed. When the computer is turned off, RAM
Memory is completely cleared.
The computer's permanent memory is in the hard disk drive. When you turn on your computer again, your O/S
and other files that are needed are once again loaded into RAM.
RAM Memory allows rapid and random access to the data it is storing, thus providing the data that is
needed when it is needed. This rapid accessibility is what makes computers run smoothly.
In general, there are two types of RAM Memory, DRAM and SRAM. DRAM is slower but much
cheaper, it is thus much more common. Most computers have a form of DRAM. SRAM is much faster and much more
expensive, so it is seen only in high-end computers. Both types of RAM are microchips (pictured at the
top), so they are small in size. They are not inter-compatible.
If you have a slow computer, adding more of the exact type of DRAM or SRAM memory chips you already
have in your computer will enable your computer to work considerably faster.
