The Computer Dictionary
Portal
Portal Site
A website intended as an anchor site for users, for their use as a gateway to other websites. Thus, a
portal is or proposes to be a major point of entry to the Web. Examples of successful general
portals include Yahoo, Excite, Netscape, Lycos, and CNET. A portal site might have a search
engine, a free email service, or offer other services to encourage visitors.
There are also niche portals dedicated to a specific topic of interest, such as Fool.com for investors
and Garden.com for gardeners.
