JPEG
Joint Photographic Experts Group
This is a cross-platform (Mac and PC) color image file compression format. Unlike GIF, JPEG is not
limited in color rendition. Therefore, JPEG is the most common format for compressing photographic images.
However, JPEG is a "lossy" format, meaning that some quality is lost in compression. If the image is
overly compressed, the graphic becomes noticeably "blocky." The
file-name extension for JPEG is .jpg.
