The Computer Dictionary
Hits
A commonly-used term that inaccurately describes the number of visitors to a
website. In fact, hits describe the number of visitors to each single web file, or individual page
within a website.
To illustrate: If there were 30 hits, that means that 30 pages (or files) were accessed by one or more
visitors. Because each visited file counts as one hit, it is really not possible to determine how many
visitors came to the website. However, if you divide the number of hits by, say, three (3), at least you
may have a better idea of the number of visitors to your site.
