Emoticon
Emotional Icon
An "emotional icon" or emoticon (pronounced ee-moh'ti-kon) is a keyboard-typed glyph, commonly
called a "smiley" or "smiley face", that is used in text communications, such as in informal email, instant
messaging, in chat rooms, and on forums. It is used to indicate the emotional state or the
intent of the writer. Similies add a human dimension into a text conversation that often adds clarity to
the text message. It takes the place of what would normally be seen in face expressions in a face-to-face meeting
or heard in voice changes during telephone conversations.
Of the keyboard-typed glyphs, several are very common. They include:
:-) "smiley face" indicating humor, friendliness, sometimes sarcasm
:-( "froney face" indicating sadness, sympathy
;-) "winkey face" indicating 'that's it', just kidding
:-o indicating surprise, amazement
:-D indicating very pleased or very happy
Many thousands of smiley designs have been created and some forums will have a page of graphic smilies that can
be used in forum messages.
While some people dislike their use, smilies are nevertheless a common and accepted means of expression.
However, if you decide to use them, please do so sparingly.
