Directory

On the World Wide Web, a directory is a repository of website listings organized by major topics and subtopics. Examples of directories include DMOZ and Yahoo.

Directories index websites using human editors that personally visit the website, as opposed to an automated spiders used by search engines. The human touch allows discoveries in areas a spider might not be able to recognize as meaningful or important.
