The Computer Dictionary
CPU
Central Processing Unit
The CPU, or Central Processing Unit, is also commonly called the
processor, or the microprocessor. The CPU is the brain of
the computer. It's job is to process data and to interpret instructions. The quality (speed) of the processor
determines how fast the system will run.
The processor is the most expensive component in a computer, with price being determined primarily by speed and
efficiency. There are two popular manufacturers, AMC and Intel.
Note: The term CPU
is sometimes used to refer to the computer case. This is incorrect. The CPU is a component
within the case, it is not the case.
