How To Build A Computer
Step
Five:
CD-ROM And DVD Player
Configuration & Installation
And The
Floppy Disk (if you must)
The CD-ROM drive and the DVD player are both configured and
installed in the same manner. For each one do the
following:
Note: Not many will want or need a Floppy Disk drive
anymore. They are "old technology," however some still use
them.
Configuration
This configuration is easy. What you will be doing is to set
your CD-ROM or DVD player in a primary (Master) source
mode, while also setting the CD-ROM or DVD player as a
subordinate to the hard drive. As always, first ground
yourself. Locate the jumpers. Position the jumper to
the "Master" position. Then connect the drive's interface and
sound cables. A diagram of settings can
usually be found right above the jumper pins, or it will be in
the manual. This can help you figure out what goes where. Note
that the hard drives are on IDE 1, the CD-ROM or DVD
player should be on a separate channel, usually IDE 2.
When connecting the second drive/player, there may be either
two IDE 2's or there will be an IDE 2 and an IDE
3.
Installation
The bay cover having been removed, see if it is necessary to
attach the rails in order to mount the CD-ROM drive or DVD
player. If needed, screw them into place on each side of the
case. Slide the CD drive or the DVD player into the bay from
the front. If you have side latches, slide in until it clicks
into place. If you have screws, screw the drive into place.
Make sure the drive or player is flush with the front and
is straight. Now you're done.
You will connect The CD-DOM drive and the DVD player later,
after the motherboard is installed.
Floppy
Disk Drive
There is no configuration.
To install, remove the floppy bay cover, slide the
floppy disk drive into position. Screw the floppy drive into
place.
You are now done. As with the CD-ROM drive and the DVD
player, you will connect the Floppy Drive later, after the
motherboard is installed.
