bit

Bit comes from the term, "binary digit." A bit is either 1 or 0 in a binary numeral, it is the smallest unit of information handled by a computer. A typical page of text will have about 16,000 bits. Because eight (8) bits make a byte, that same page of text will have about 2,000 bytes.
