The Computer Dictionary
Bit
b
A single unit of data. A bit is either 1 or 0 in a binary numeral; it is the smallest unit of
information handled by a computer. The word comes from the term, "binary digit."
A typical page of text will have about 16,000 bits. Because eight (8) bits make a byte, that same page
of text will have about 2,000 bytes.
Note: In reference to digital data, a small "b" refers to
bits, and a capital "B" refers to bytes.
