benchmarking

A series of tests performed in order to gage and set the performance of one computer's components and subsystems by comparing test results with known computer standards.

Such testing will set the computer's level of operation, and can also uncover the presence of a previously undetected problem or weakness within the computer. Burn-in tests will isolate each component to better identify the exact location and nature of any potential problem. See burn-in test.
