ASCII
American Standard Code for
Information Interchange
The predominant encoding system used in HTML
and URLs. ASCII uses a 7-bit code
standard that assigns numeric values to up to 128
alphanumeric and special control characters. The use of
ASCII makes it possible for plain text to be
displayed in the exact same manner on any personal computer in
any country in the world.
