MySQL (pronounced my'sea'qual) is a very popular, single-query database management system that is ideal for web applications running on Linux or Windows. MySQL has become popular because it is fast, stable, easy to use, and it is open source (free). There are separate Linux and Windows versions of MySQL. They are not interchangeable.
