What are OEM Parts?
Sometimes called a "White Box" version of a product, OEM, or Original
Equipment Manufacturer, are lower priced parts that are comparable to the standard "Retail" version. The
sale of OEM products is common in the industry, however, buyers must know the ins and outs of
purchasing a "white box" item.
To begin with, the warranty will be not be full. Many OEM items will have a one-year warranty. Always
keep your receipts since the one-year begins on the day of purchase. If you have trouble with the OEM
part, and you must send the product back for repair, postage/shipping will be your responsibility.
Note that OEM processors usually carry only a 30-day warranty.
Secondly, technical support is usually not be the same as a manufacturer's standard part. Manufacturers assume
any purchaser to have experience with computer hardware assembly. Therefore, they cut the price in part to reflect
no technical support. However, this does vary. So, it is good to make sure an OEM part is covered with technical
support, especially for installation questions
Thirdly, the manual will likely be very brief with only short instructions for installation. The OEM products are usually made for expert technicians; therefore, the manufacturer will assume that detailed instructions are unnecessary. Sometimes, the information on the manufacturer's website (or CD disk- if you are lucky to get one) will be the only help available.
Because of the above limitations, it is always a good idea to ask about the policy and warranty on all "white box" items, especially hard disks drives and processors.
Keep in mind that CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, RAM Memory, Processors, Hard Disk Drives, Sound Cards, and Printers are usually easy to install.
However, DVD-RAM, Video Editing hardware, Tape Drives, and even some newer Graphics Cards will usually require some knowledge of how PC hardware work. For these parts, it may be best to buy standard manufacturer parts, non-OEM parts, with a full warranty and full technical support.
Also, keep in mind that newly released products are often much more of a challenge to install, since
manufacturers may not have all the bugs worked out. If a fix or patch is needed, it could take weeks before it is available by access on the Internet.
So, weight the cons and pros of each item you wish to buy, and select OEM only if you think it
best.
Whatever you buy, discount computer parts are always the way to go.
