ASCII - American Standard Code for Information Interchange

The universal standard encoding system. ASCII uses a 7 bit code scheme that assigns numeric values to up to 128 letters, numbers, punctuation marks, and other marks and symbols.

The use of ASCII makes it possible for text to be displayed in the exact same manner on any computer in any country in the world.
